Healthy Eating vs. Dieting

Hello all!  I hope that this meets you in the highest of spirits.

 

I've said it before and I'll say it again adequate exercise is only a tenth of the battle , a great majority of the war is with healthy eating.  I tell my clients all the time that diets are no good 👎. They're not satisfying, they're temporary and oftentimes they can cause one to binge eat because after a meal you're still hungry! Instead of completely eliminating all the foods that you love to eat, change your portion sizes. Yes! You can actually still eat that piece of chocolate cake or those French fries and not have to take yourself on a guilt trip because of it. The chart below shows an example (using the majority of the food groups) of how your portion sizes  should ideally look. You can take control of your "diet" by just taking control of your portions. You can start by gradually working on decreasing your portion sizes to the recommended amount. Instead of having 8 ounces of chicken, take it down to five or six, then work yourself down from there. The important thing is not to send your body into shock by starving it. That completely defeats the purpose of healthy living.

 

You'll find a lot of times you can make a major difference in your eating style by simply incorporating healthier items into each meal. So if you're going to scarf down a juicy burger and French fries, add a salad to the mix or another veggie of your choice. You can also do other things to tweak your entree's. Using the example of the juicy burger, instead of using 75/25 or 80/20 grade, pay the extra $1 or $2 for 90/10, 93/7, or 95/5. Remember the higher the percentage of lean meat, the less fat that you'll be ingesting. Or you can even try ground turkey, which is tends to be on the cheaper and not to mention the healthier side. Also if you have a serious sweet tooth, like me, you can substitute those sugar filled treats with some fruit or substitute those calorie filled ingredients with healthier options. For example, when making cake (or cupcakes) you can substitute oil with Greek yogurt, its less fattening and it actually taste great!

You can start living a healthier lifestyle right now, but the choice is yours. It takes true dedication to the decision in order to see changes. So keep it up!
